Artistic Nude Styles
There is perhaps no artistic subject more provocative than the nude female form. A single statue, painting, or photograph of a woman in her fully natural state can inspire awe in one viewer and draw the ire of another. Is this empowering or exploitative? Proud or shameful? Divine or sinful?
Every artist or model who has dared to bring nude art into the world has participated in this dialogue, whether intentionally or not. If you find this millennia-long conversation intriguing and want to be a part of it, even if it’s for your own eyes only, you can read about different approaches to artistic nude work here.
Sheer Covering, Draped Fabric
This style evokes the classical art tradition of draping fabric over the nude form to cover while simultaneously revealing the contours of the body. As you can see in the examples below, common versions of this style include curling up in bed with a sheet for covering or using sheer fabric to obscure rather than conceal.
Implied Nude
In the implied nude tradition, the model poses nude but avoids explicit exposure. This is accomplished via any number of creative decisions, from specific posing choices to careful placement of environmental elements and shadows to preserve an sense of mystery. Intriguing, provocative, daring, but still “Instagram safe”.
The Partial Reveal
This style embraces nudity while still choosing only to reveal or emphasize certain aspects of the form. This is often accomplished by silhouette lighting, selective posing, and cropping or tight composition. Here artful restraint remains, as you choose what to reveal and how.
Fine Art Nude
Classical artistic nude style holds nothing back in its expressive intentions. Unguarded, unbridled, unfiltered, yet always tastefully rendered and respectful to the traditions of fine art, this style of nude photography is non-explicit in its ethos, treating the nude form as a figure for study and admiration.
